Values in Action
Our Sustainable Campus
Drought-tolerant native plants give our campus a uniquely SoCal character. And the cacti, yucca, agaves, and succulents that dot our grounds take almost no watering, making our landscaping some of California’s most sustainable.
Three-quarters of our campus hosts California native, drought-tolerant plants.

The Mounds
The Mounds is a hub of campus activity. Study in the sun, socialize, play music, practice your slackline skills, or sit in an Adirondack chair by the fountain (don't worry, the fountain uses recirculated fresh water for less waste).
Student Garden
The Pitzer Student Garden was founded in 1994 when a parking lot by Mead Hall was turned into a garden of fruit trees and vegetables along with a coop for Pitzer's chickens-in-residence. In 2021, a revitalization effort introduced new resources and equipment to keep the garden lush and thriving. Visitors are welcome 24-7 (the chickens love company!).

The Outback Preserve is home to the rare Alluvial Sage Scrub ecosystem and serves as a living-learning laboratory for students, faculty, staff, and the larger community to engage in discussion and exploration of endangered ecosystems.

The Robert Redford Conservancy for Southern California Sustainability (RRC) is a visionary environmental learning center that holds classrooms, creative studios, and open-air meeting spaces. The Conservancy is situated on 12 acres of conserved land, and directly neighbors the Bernard Field Station, which gives students a total of 97 acres of natural habitat for biological research.

The Grove House is a two-story Craftsman-style bungalow that serves as a study space, restaurant, and event venue. It has been an iconic part of our campus since 1976, when it was purchased for a dollar (you heard that right) and moved to campus in three separate pieces. It takes its name from its location on a lot adjacent to a grove of citrus trees.
